Start WebDEC, add an audio monitor and decide which alerts should be logged or recorded.
How to use WebDEC
WebDEC monitors live audio streams for EAS alerts. Add a stream, start a monitor, then use filters to decide what alerts should be logged or recorded.
1. Add a Monitor
Head to Monitors and select the + button. Give the monitor a short name and paste in the URL to the audio stream you want WebDEC to listen to.
If you enable Start on Save the monitor will begin as soon as you hit save.
WebDEC needs a direct audio stream URL to work. A link to a YouTube stream or a radio station's webpage will not work.
The stream also needs to allow browser audio processing. Some streams can play in a browser but still block WebDEC from decoding them because of cross-origin restrictions.
Monitor Name:
This is for you to identify what monitor is which in filters or the Overview page. For example, WBAP.
Monitor Stream URL:
This is where you put the link to the stream you want to monitor.
Start on Save
This will start the monitor as soon as you save it. Don't tick this if you want to configure filters before starting the stream.
2. Start Monitoring
Once added, your monitor will appear on the Monitors page.
Select Start if your stream hasn't already started. While a monitor is started WebDEC is constantly listening for SAME headers on the stream.
The monitor card shows how long the monitor has been active for you can also use Stop here at any time to stop monitoring that stream.
3. Listen to a stream live
Select Listen Live to hear the audio currently passing through a monitor.
Listening live does not affect decoding of alerts or recordings. WebDEC will keep monitoring the stream as normal.
If you move away from the Monitors page, you can keep listening and stop the stream using the Stop button in the bottom left corner of the screen.
4. Set up filters
Filters decide what will happen when an alert is received.
Head to the Filters page and select the + button to create one.
Filters are checked in order. The first filter that matches an alert will decide what happens to it.
Filter Name:
This is a short name for you to know what a filter does. For example, Block Tests.
Event Codes:
This is where you enter the list of event codes you want to trigger this filter for.
For example:
RWT, DMO
Use ALL to match every event code.
FIPS Codes:
This is where you enter the list of FIPS codes you want to trigger this filter for.
For example for Hawaii, HI and Honolulu, HI:
15001, 15003
Use ALL to match every FIPS code.
Sender Codes:
This is where you enter the list of sender codes you want to trigger this filter for.
For example for the National Weather Service and Civil Authorities:
WXR, CIV
Use ALL to match every sender code.
Monitors:
This is where you pick which monitors a filter will affect. For example, if you have a monitor for a Hawaii stream, you can set a filter to block RWTs from that stream only by selecting just that monitor.
Filter Action:
This is where you can choose what WebDEC does when an alert matches the filter.
Depending on what you select you can Log and Record or Skip and Ignore it
Filter order matters:
WebDEC checks the filters from the top of the list to the bottom.
The first matching filter wins.
For example, if you want to block ALL RWTs you could place a Block RWTs filter above the default filter:
1. Block RWTs
2. Default Filter
A Required Weekly Test would match Block RWTs first and be ignored. Any other alerts would continue to the Default Filter and be logged and recorded.
Use the ↑ and ↓ buttons to change the order of your filters.
5. Alerts and recordings
When WebDEC receives a valid alert, it will appear on the Overview and Alerts page.
If the matching filter allows recording, audio playback becomes available once the recording has finished.
The Info button shows the header data received for the alert.
